So now you know the basics of Twitter, why you need a Twitter account, and even how to use your time on Twitter effectively, so you don’t fall into the giant black hole that is social media. But, do you have a Twitter account? If you don’t, we’ll walk you through how to set one up. It’s easy and straightforward, but we know the world of Twitter can be a smidge overwhelming to those just dipping their toes in the Twitter-water.

1. Go to the Twitter website. To sign up, you will have to give your full name, email, and a password. Be ready with a password that you can remember, but isn’t an easy one to guess. Use symbols and numbers as a way to mix it up.

2. Once you put the initial information, click “Sign Up” and follow the steps on the next page. This is where you will choose your user name. Keep in mind, you have fans that know you by your author name, so creating a new moniker may sound fun, but it will confuse your fans and they won’t be as easily able to find you and follow you on Twitter.

3. Once you have determined your username, click “Create my account.” You will then need to confirm your account by clicking on the email that comes from Twitter into your email inbox.
4. You will then be taken to a welcome screen where you can start “following” other Twitter users. Start following and engaging! You will also receive notices when Twitter users start following you. It takes some time to build a true, authentic Twitter presence. But then again, it takes time in real life, so why should social media be any different?

Now that you’re a Twitter user, take a tour of Twitter here. They’ve got it all laid out for you!
